Overview
The Aerospace Teacher Externship is an initiative of Team NASA, a collaboration of aerospace contractor and community representatives whose goal is to build a seamless partnership with NASA Johnson Space Center to enhance employee, contractor and community activities.
Team NASA promotes outreach in science, technology, engineering and math education to help increase interest and awareness in technical careers.
The intent of summer externships is to provide opportunities for educators to participate for a one-week period in business and/or industry to form connections between educational curriculum and business and industry skills needed for a 21st century knowledge-based economy.
The externship is a chance to use a "business classroom" to connect education skills with what is happening in the workplace and to clarify for teachers the vast number of options available to students. Teachers involved in an externship get the chance to practice or observe current technology, view the myriad possibilities within a diverse range of career fields, and learn what new skills, knowledge, and further education are necessary for the careers in the academic areas in which they teach.
